Mecum held its first ever summer motorcycle auction in Las Vegas this year. We were fortunately able to attend on Friday June 2nd on our way north from Arizona to Washington state.
We had heard concerns from many who religiously attended that January Las Vegas auction that a summer auction wouldn’t draw the same numbers of attendees and certainly the auction prices would be soft. That proved not to be the case, at least for Triumphs.
Our friend Randy Zimmerman brought 100 motorcycles from his large California collection, including over 30 Triumphs. Randy and his brother Mark have decided to further focus their collection on significant racing motorcycles, so they decided to move many of the bikes that didn’t fit their new vision along at this auction.
As usual, this posting will focus on the Triumphs at the auction but complete results can be found on the Mecum website. To see the auction prices achieved it is necessary to log in using an email name.
Besides Randy and Mark’s Triumphs, there were only about 15 others offered at this auction.
The only one worthy of mention was what we considered one of the bargains of the auction … a 1953 6T Blackbird with a sprung hub which sold for $15,400*. We didn’t check that this was a real Blackbird but the quality of the restoration was very nice for the price. (*= includes 10% buyer’s premium)
Randy and Mark’s Triumphs sold well. Only 3 did not hit their reserve … a 1971 T120R, a 1960 T102R and a 1970 T120V.
The best Zimmerman price achieved was for a restored 1959 T120 Bonneville that sold for $28,600*
The biggest surprise was the Zimmerman 1970 T120R which sold for $24,200* which we believe is a record for that model.
Other Zimmerman sales worth mentioning were:
1965 T120C (west coast set up as an east coast) … $22,000*, 1964 T120C … $19,250*
1966 T120R … $19,800*
1961 T120C … $20,350*, their very rare 1975 T140V sold for $27,500*.
1963 T120R … $18,700*
1969 T120R … $18,700*
Based upon these auction results, the Triumphs we are selling from our collection appear to be well priced.
